Author: Gahssan Mehmood

The objective of this study was to quantify the pure contribution of each determinant to socioeconomic inequality in infant mortality in Punjab province. In other words, to identify the major factors which contribute to a greater extent, in inequality in infant mortality, in the Punjab province. The current research has used the secondary data. As a measure of social and economic inequality of child mortality, the concentration index has been used. Concentration index was decomposed into its determining factor. The largest contribution to inequality in infant mortality in the Punjab province is attributed to household economic status (42.35%), maternal education (35.52%), rural residence (11.45 %) and mother’s age (10.44%). The findings indicate that socioeconomic inequality in infant mortality in Punjab is determined not only by health system functions but also by factors beyond the scope of health authorities and healthcare delivery system.
