Mediation Analysis of Child Mortality In Pakistan: An Application Of Structural Equation Modelling
Being a significant indicator of country’s overall health performance, correlates of child mortality have been investigated in great depth yet their indirect linkages rarely got acknowledged. Against this backdrop, the current study aims at analysing the mediating role of variables in the theoretical framework of child mortality as outlined by Mosley & Chen by using the PDHS (2017-18) dataset. The variables are categorised into three group: socioeconomic, endogenous proximate and exogenous factors. Owing to the presence of latent variables, Structural Equation Modelling is employed for estimation of the econometric model. Estimates reveal a significant direct impact of mother’s awareness, her age, obstetric history and household size on child mortality while an indirect linkage of wealth and mother’s education. Moreover, both, Sobel Test and Bootstrapping statistically confirmed the presence of mediators in our model. In line with the results, it is suggested that along with education, awareness raising programs for mothers be initiated to improve the healthcare situation in Pakistan Supervisor:-Dr. Hafsa Hina
