Sustainable Tourism: Tourism impact on people around the Lal Suhanra National Park, Bahawalpur

This research undertakes to investigate the tourism impacts on people around the Lal Suhanra National Park (LSNP) Bahawalpur in the Punjab province. One million national and fifty thousand foreign tourists visit the Lal Suhanra National Park every year. Qualitative research strategy was used to meet the research objectives. Primary as well as secondary data was used. The primary data was collected from Lal Suhanra National Park. Whereas the secondary data was collected from existing literature sources on the subject. In this research thematic analysis was used for analysing data. Two Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings of this study show that local people around the Lal Suhanra Park are benefiting from the park through employment and seventy five percent employees in LSNP are local people. But at the same time it is found that local are facing adverse cultural and environmental impacts such as immoral activities and damage of existing infrastructural facilities. The findings may be applied to Lal Suhanra National Park to maximize the positive and minimize the negative tourism impacts on local people.
