Infrastructure development: Analysing socio-economic impacts of Multan-Sukkur motorway in Pano Aqil, Sukkur

Motorways are the backbone of nation’s economic development. Unfortunately, barring a few hundreds km of motorways, Pakistan lacks road network due to which it has been suffering badly due to curtailed mobility, loss of working hours, economic stagnation and frequent accidents. In order to support national development, the government has devised an ambitious plan of developing and constructing road infrastructure under China-Pakistan Economic Cooperation. Multan-Sukkur motorway is one of many such projects, which is set to open for traffic by the mid of 2019. This study aimed to find socio-economic impacts of Multan-Sukkur motorway in Pano Aqil, a Tehsil of District Sukkur. This is a qualitative research, which used both probability and non-probability sampling techniques. Framework analysis technique is used for analysing data and drawing policy recommendations. Both displacees and non-displacees were interviewed through semi-structured and unstructured interviews. Except a few displacees, who expressed lack of satisfaction, majority of the respondents agreed that the project has already brought a positive change in the outlook of the area. Real estate has witnessed a massive boom, job opportunities have been created and government has started focusing on human development. Agriculture sector is expected to grow further as crop productivity would increase whereas fruits and vegetables will be transported to other cities through the motorway. However, local businessmen recommended for opening of an industrial complex near the motorway interchange so that indigenous products can be transported off after value addition. Moreover, government should consult the people before the displacement in order to minimize the impacts of mega-projects. Supervisor:- Dr. Muhammad Jehangir Khan
