ABSTRACT

Environment sustainability in textile production has gained significant attention from the industry and academia recently. Textile industries in developing countries such as Pakistan are facing resource uncertainty exacerbated by the threat of climate change, while striving to boost the economic output. In this context, this research aims to explore the environmental sustainability in Pakistan textile industry. The objectives of the present research are to assess the current focus on environment, identify challenges and opportunities faced by the industry, assess consumer interest in sustainable products, and propose feasible solutions for incorporating environmental sustainability in the textile industry. The Ecological Modernization Theory is employed for discussion in the study. For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted from manufacturers, retailers, and trade organization members. Moreover, quantitative consumer surveys were conducted to address the research objectives. Findings suggest that considerable motivators, challenges and opportunities exists regarding incorporation of environment sustainability. The major challenges include; lack of technological innovation, lack of research in environment sustainability in Pakistan, threat of climate change, resource depletion, and weak enforcement of laws. However, on the positive note, opportunities were also uncovered. These included, market opportunities, collaborations potential, and sustainable agriculture. It was determined that the issue of environmental protection is significant for survival of both the resources and the industry. Consumer surveys depicted that awareness levels regarding sustainably produced items are increasing. Based on the literature, interviews and survey results, future strategies for ensuring environmental protection while not forgoing economic outputs are suggested. This study will be useful for the industrial managers and policy-makers for ensuring environmental sustainability in Pakistan textile industry.
